Nature Live Online: Amazing Ammonites

Museum scientist Zoe Hughes takes a closer look at two familiar sea creatures with beautiful spiralled shells: the ammonites and the nautiloids.

Millions of years ago, both animals could be found in the oceans. The extinct ammonites are known for their distinct and widespread fossils, while most people will recognise the shell of the nautilus as a bathroom decoration.

What allowed the nautilus to survive where the ammonites didn’t and what lies underneath their shells?
