Mysteries of the Deep Sea

Wednesday 25 September, 18.30–20.00

Have you ever wondered what lives 4,000 metres beneath the surface of the sea? Well, that’s exactly what our scientist Dr Adrian Glover and his team set out to discover on their latest SMARTEX expedition in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

Join us 150 years after the first ever deep-sea exploration, for a panel discussion with Adrian and his team of ‘underwater astronauts’ to discover what life is like in the deepest parts of our oceans. They’ll reveal the secrets of the deep, discuss their recent expedition and introduce you to extraordinary creatures never seen before.

You’ll get to see pioneering film and camera footage from their expedition as well as the amazing specimens they found as they regale you with anecdotes and stories from their trip. Plus, they’ll be delving into what this research means for the protection of not only the oceans but the planet as a whole.

  • Dr Adrian Glover bio

Adrian leads our Deep-Sea Systematics and Ecology Research Group that carries out high-quality deep-ocean research. The deep sea is the world’s largest and least explored ecosystem.

Adrian’s team undertakes regular expeditions to sites across the world, from the poles to the tropics. They use the latest DNA taxonomy methods to describe new species, study their evolutionary origin, investigate their ecological interactions and test general theories in biodiversity sciences.

Pink sea pig nicknamed the 'Barbie pig'

Many creatures that are discovered in the Deep Sea have never been seen before, such as this sea pig which scientists nicknamed "Barbie-pig"
