There are around 3,500 species of centipede, present on all continents except Antarctica.
All are predators, injecting venom using fang-like appendages that house a venom gland.
The biggest, most aggressive species - some capable of preying on bats, rodents and birds - belong to a group composed of at least 700 species with a fossil record that extends back more than 300 million years.
