On starting at the museum in 1901 he began to specialize in fishes at the suggestion of Günther and worked under Boulenger.
He was a foreign member of the Royal Danish Academy, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Society of Icthyologists and Herpetologists. He also received the Geoffrey de St. Hilaire Medal from the Société Nationale d'Acclimatation de France
