Appointed Assistant in the bird section of the Department of Zoology 1882; assistant to Bowdler Sharpe from 1884; Curator of birds from 1909 when Sharpe died; resigned due to ill-health 1918. He had made several expeditions to increase the collections and was successful in raising funds to finance others. He wrote some of the Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum (1874-1898) and also completed the five volume Catalogue of the collection of birds' eggs in the British Museum (1901-1912) left unfinished by E W Oates. |
