Activity | Established by Boris Uvarov, originally set up as a working group in the 1920s the research centre became an official subdivision of the Imperial Bureau of Entomology in 1945. Leaders in locust research and pest management. Located within the BM(NH) from 1945 until November 1956 when they moved into their new accomodations built by the Office of Works in Princes Gate, Kensington. By the 1970s their main focus on locusts was eroding and with the death of Uvarov they became the Centre for Overseas Pest Research in 1971, because of this most of the research centres work and survey duties were handed over to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. In 1983 it became the Tropical Development Research Institute, the Overseas development Natural Resources Institute in 1987 and finally the Natural Resources Institute in 1990. The institute was sold to the University of Greenwich in 1996. |
