Activity | Initially worked as a governess in Leicestershire. Qualified as a canine nurse and set up a dogs' home in Flamstead, Herts. Moved with mother to Croydon 1915. Fellow of Royal Entomological Society 1919. Studied at Imperial College. Took up post of curator of insects at Zoological Society of London 1920. 1924 took leave of absence to sail on St George's expedition to West Indies, Panama, Galapagos, South Pacific. Resigned from ZSL 1926 and came to NHM (unpaid). Wrote science books for income. 1928-30 collecting in New Hebrides. 1933 Papua New Guinea - sent 20,000 specimens to Adelaide Museum. 1939 returned to England. Travelled to Pacific islands again 1949-50. 1955 appointed OBE for her services to science and given a civil-list pension. 1954 last trip to Aneityum aged 73 - built a hut called Red Crest using local labour and lived there for nine months. After her return to England she continued to write and to help younger scholars until her death. |
