Lecturer in petrology 1928 - 1931, promoted Professor of Mineralogy and Petrology 1931 a post he held until his retirement in 1961. He was president of the Geological Society 1949 and was awarded the Wollaston medal in 1960. President of the Mineralogical Society 1948 - 1951 and 1951 - 1960 he was also one of the society's trustees. 1938 elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London and was vice president 1949 - 1950. He was an honorary felllow of the royal society of Edinburgh 1957. Correspondent of the Geological Society of American and honorary member of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He was awarded the Rockling Medal from the mineralogical society of America (of which he was an honorary member) in 1954.
