Activity | Joined Army Service Corps in WWI, then moved to aircraft factory in Fulham Road. December 1921- March 1922 visited South America - Andes, Pacific, Lake Titicaca - observing natural history. January 1923 went to Egypt. Involved in Girl Guides, eventually Captain of the 12th Chelsea Company. 1923 answered advertisement to join Evelyn Cheesman (London Zoo) on research trip to the Pacific, Galapagos etc. 'St George' left Dartmouth 9 April 1924: Cynthia was assistant to entomologist Cyril Collenette, collecting coleoptera and lepidoptera. She returned to England via cargo boat late summer 1925. Entomological collections came to NHM, Cynthia became unofficial worker (volunteer) in Department of Entomology under direction of D E Kimmins (Neuropteroids). Appointed Honorary Associate 1948. 'Retired' 1957. 1926 joined London Natural History Society. Elected President for 1932 & 1933, Vice-President 1934-57, Honorary Vice-President 1957-91. Chairman of Ornithology Section 1935, 1945, 1946; Chairman of Entomology Section 1945-50; Chairman of Nature Conservation Committee 1949-57. Member of the Committee on Bird Sanctuaries in the Royal Parks. Council member and Vice-President of Royal Entomological Society. 1932 Life Member of Botanical Society of the British Isles. March - September 1927 expedition with Collenette to the Mato Grasso, Brazil. 1929 - 6 months in SE Asia collecting lepidoptera and odonata. 1932/3 - Canada January 1934 - 6 months in southern and eastern Africa. 1937- February 1938 - Africa. Joined Auxiliary Fire Service 28 March 1938. Instrumental in ensuring a turntable ladder was used when a bomb hit the Botany Dept 1940 - Collenette said her action had probably saved the Museum from destruction. Elected first Honorary Member of the British Dragonfly Society (formed 1983). Donated Odonata specimens to National Museum of Ireland and books to Royal Irish Academy.
