Title | Gallery Photograph Album 3: J G Dollman and assistant with model elephant diorama |
Description | Captain J G Dollman (seated), Assistant Keeper of Zoology, designed this model in preparation for an innovative display in one of the bays in the Central Hall which opened in July 1927. Three South African elephants were placed in a tableau of their natural surroundings, the Knysna Forest, accompanied by real timber and vegetation specially prepared to prevent decay. Both specimens and surroundings were presented by the Union Government of South Africa. Dr G F Herbert-Smith, Assistant Museum Secretary, designed the lighting effects - eight variations, from bright daylight to soft moonlight. Newspapers note that Captain Dollman was assisted by Mrs Dollman Print Size: 250x200mm
