| AdminHistory | Bernard Barham Woodward supervised the recataloguing of the departmental libraries between 1889 and 1892, and was responsible for cataloguing all the monographs, serials, maps and manuscripts entering the Museum libraries thereafter. He developed a Union Catalogue on 4" x 8" slips which was written by hand until about 1905 and typed until 1913, when it was superseded by cards cut from the printed catalogue. The decision to print the Library catalogue was taken by the Trustees in 1888. Printing commenced in 1898, and eight volumes were published between 1903 and 1940. Woodward's arrangement of class-marks (DF607/2) was printed in 1906, and a framed copy still hangs in the General Library. It was initially used throughout the General and Geology libraries, and was enlarged and amended over the years (DF607/9). |
