Activity | Started as 'Operation Tabarin', armed forces expedition during the WWII, which set out in 1943 and established year-round stations at Port Lockroy, Deception Island and Hope Bay; undertook scientific investigations including biology, geology, meteorology and topographical survey; bases transferred to Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1945 which operated under the auspices of the Colonial Office; expanded scientific work to include ionospherics and glaciology; additional stations were opened for varying periods; FIDS was renamed the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in 1962; has been a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) since 1967.
