Worked in Vertebrate Biodiversity Research Group. Continued working at the museum after his retirement and died 'in service' 1998 Undertook his Phd on cretaceous fishes in London 1961. Was a fierce advocate of systematics through his work with fossil fishes which led him to challenge many of the traditional systematic practices that were widely used without question. He led the move away from classification through ancestry to classification through process searching for cladistic sister-groups that could be discovered by examining the structure of specimens.
