Animals in their Environment

Janne Heimonen, Finland

Top spot

When he woke up in his hide in the woods near Toivakka, central Finland, Janne's heart sank. He thought he'd be facing a capercaillie lek - the display arena of a male, where he shows off to potential mates. But he'd pitched his hide facing the wrong direction, and there wasn't a male in sight. Giving up his hopes of photographing displaying capercaillies that day, Janne was about to sneak a bit closer to where he knew the birds might be, to work out the best spot to move to that night, when a movement to one side caught his eye. 'It was a flying capercaillie. It landed on top of the fir tree, right in front of me, and started displaying - calling and shaking his head, with his tail spread.' Janne had just a minute or so to frame the shot and capture the mood of the moment. 'It turned out not to be such a bad morning after all.'
