Lure of the bee

Jack was experimenting with macro-photography in his garden in New South Wales, using extension tubes he'd had for his birthday. Then he spotted the honeybee entering the great white cup of the magnolia flower. But there were challenges: 'Extension tubes made the depth of field tiny. So I had to use a high ISO, which introduced grain into the shot. Also, the bee was moving so fast that my camera's autofocus was too slow.' Using manual settings, he took several pictures before the bee exited. The result? A beautiful experiment, he admits.

Nikon D5000 + 55-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens at 200mm + Kenko 12, 20 and 36mm extension tubes; 1/500 sec at f5.6; ISO 800.
