Jack Chapman (United Kingdom)

Deer at dusk

Jack was learning to drive, and while on holiday in the Scottish Highlands, he took advantage of being allowed to practise using the family car and headed up to Loch Garry to do some landscape photography. As the light began to fade at the end of the day, he noticed that red deer were gathering on the loch shore. Jack changed to a short lens, knowing that the lack of light meant there was no point in trying to take a portrait. 'Even then I struggled with shutter speeds and focusing,' he says. He was still trying out different compositions when it started to rain. But it was the resulting clouds banked up on the mountains opposite that helped create the moody atmosphere he was after.

Canon EOS 40D + 18-55mm lens; 0.5 sec at f5.6; ISO 640; tripod.
