Bringing back breakfast

For several years, a pair of kestrels has nested in a hole in the wall under a mountain road near where Lucas lives in Aure, in the French Pyrénées. Last year, his father built a hide so they could watch the birds. It overlooked the kestrels' favourite perch, where they would land before flying into the nest hole. Lucas and his father would get up when it was still dark so that they could be in the hide by dawn without the kestrels realizing they were there. Here the male kestrel, clutching breakfast for its newly hatched chicks, pauses for a few moments in the first rays of sun, giving Lucas the perfect pose for a photograph.

Nikon D300 + 500mm lens; 1/1000 sec at f5.6; ISO 400; tripod; hide.
