Andrew's goal was to create a picture that would give something of the feeling of being at a gannet colony at the height of the breeding season - one of the great spectacles that the UK has to offer. Hermaness National Nature Reserve in the Shetland Islands was his chosen location, but to get a clear view of the colony, he had to scramble down about 20 metres (65 feet) of crumbling cliff face. Having reached a ledge, he then had to find enough space for his tripod and to steady it against the buffeting winds for the three-second exposure that would result in the effect he wanted.

Nikon D300 + 18-35mm lens + polarizing filter; 3 sec at f29; ISO 100; Gitzo tripod + Wimberley head.
