2007: 11-14 Years - Highly Commended
Liisa Widstrand (Sweden)
Serengeti stampede
'Wildebeest are nervous animals. They run at the slightest threat of danger. I saw this small group start to run in the Serengeti in Tanzania. It was dusk, and their hooves kicked up clouds of dust that seemed to glow in the evening light.' In an endless pilgrimage, 1.5 million wildebeest follow the seasonal African rains. They are in search of water and fresh grazing grounds. The round trip between Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Masai Mara is nearly 3,000 kilometres. The seemingly never-ending trails of wildebeest rank as one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles.
