2007: Wildscapes - Highly Commended
Damon Smith (Australia)
Wetland wilderness
'For 30 years I've been photographing Australia's wild landscapes from the air. I planned to shoot this remote river just before sunset, when the low angle of the sun would help to give better definition and colour. This meant circling endlessly over my chosen bend of river, shooting through a special photo window in my plane until I had the picture.' Australia is a continent of extremes. The monsoonal wetlands of the Gulf of Carpentaria are scoured by winding rivers, and in the rainforests more than one metre of rain can fall in a day. There are also deserts where rain may not fall for years. Colossal biodiversity can be found among vast snowfields, savannah grasslands and the most spectacular coral reefs in the world.
Canon EOS 300D + 18–55mm lens at 18mm; 1/320 sec at f8; ISO 400.
