2007: Nature in Black & White - Runner-up
Michel Denis-Huot (France)
Head on
'When this bull in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa, posed, raising its head and spreading out its ears, I cropped in tight with my 500mm lens. I used the ears as a frame for the face. The light that day was dull - perfect for the muted tones I needed for black and white.' The saying 'elephants never forget' may have some scientific support. The temporal lobe of their big brains has many folds, so has a large surface area. This area may be associated with storing information, such as recognising other elephants, experiences of what to do in a drought even the ability to imagine what other elephants are feeling.
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II + 500mm f4 IS USM lens; f6.3; ISO 640.
