2007: Urban Wildlife - Highly Commended
Mark Somogyi (Hungary)
Cable doves
'While walking towards Lake Leman in Geneva, Switzerland, I caught sight of a geometric pattern of doves sitting on overhead cables. I was finding the best position for the shot when some of the birds suddenly flew off in a chaotic hurry. I had just enough time to grab this quite abstract image of animals in an urban environment.' There are more than 300 species of dove, 10 of which are among the most endangered birds in the world. They are found on every continent except Antarctica and belong to the same family as pigeons. The feral town pigeons and the beautiful white fantail doves - the symbol of peace - are actually the same species, domestic descendants of the rock dove.
