2007: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Highly Commended
Maurizio Valentini (Italy)
Flower colour
'Spring is my favourite season where I live in Abruzzo, central Italy. Last June, the highlands were in full bloom, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I found this magic spot with its sea of wildflowers. I went back many times, waiting for the soft light of an overcast, rainy day to enhance the vibrant colours.' Wildflowers is not the name given to a group of related plants. It describes any flower that grows wild and has not been planted on purpose. Poppies, for example, grow well in disturbed soil and so are often seen on farmland. Their bright red colour can transform a wasteland into an oasis.
