2007: Animals in their Environment - Highly Commended
Scott McKinley (United States of America)
Last light
'Few places are more compelling than Montana's Glacier National Park, with its rugged beauty. I went there to take pictures of animals in harmony with their environment, to create a sense of place. Mountain goats are powerful animals, but this billy was quite accommodating, allowing me to realise my vision.' Mountain goats live on high mountain slopes in Alaska and the northwest of America. Snow is their biggest enemy. They rarely slip and fall, but avalanches sweep many to their deaths. They eat vegetation, from grasses to parts of coniferous trees, and are vulnerable to mountain lions, wolves, golden eagles and grizzly bears.
