2007: Animals in their Environment - Highly Commended
Martin Eisenhawer (Germany)
Penguin in a sand storm
'The wind was whipping up black sand and grit that day in Antarctica, great for taking photos. I stopped where the gentoo penguins passed on their way between the colony and the sea and where the peaty ground contrasted with the swirling haze. Eventually a penguin trudged by, eyes partly closed against the wind - a lonely figure in an unearthly setting.' Gentoo penguins live near Antarctica on islands such as the Falklands. They have white triangular head patches. They don't walk as far for food as some penguin species, and while they can look clumsy on land they swim faster than any other penguin.
