2007: Animals in their Environment - Specially Commended
Shane Rucker (United States)
Hawk and passing storm
'The first snow drew me out into the Wood County Wildlife Area of Central Wisconsin. As the storm passed and the sun set, I noticed groups of raptors flying over the marshes - broad-winged hawks, probably on migration and refuelling by picking off red-winged blackbirds. This one circled before swooping down on its prey.' The broad-winged hawk is difficult to spot in its forest nesting ground. But thousands gather to migrate from southern Canada and North America down to Central and South America. It eats insects and amphibians, but also birds and small mammals.
