2007: The Eric Hosking Portfolio Award - Winner
Bence Máté (Hungary)
Lightning birds
'My tripod was shaking from the thunder, but my mood was electric. It's so rare to get the right mix of beautiful light, birds and lightning. On Lake Csaj, in Kiskunsag National Park, Hungary, the wildfowl and gulls didn't seem bothered. They continued with their evening preparations as the light faded and heavy rain fell.' The origin of birds has been debated for centuries. Recent research shows there are remarkable similarities between the skeletons of birds and those of dinosaurs. These similarities have led many vertebrate palaeontologists to accept the theory that modern birds are the direct descendants of one or more ancient dinosaur groups.
