2006: 11-14 Years - Highly Commended
Kyle Dickerson (South Africa)
Looping looper
Kyle was with his family in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa, when he spotted this dice-moth caterpillar on a stick right beside their vehicle. 'We had stopped because mum and dad were photographing a bee-eater,' he says, 'but I couldn't photograph it because my lens was too short'. So instead he took his tripod out and concentrated on the resting caterpillar. Its distinctive long appendages are possibly a warning to predators that it makes an unappetising snack.
Canon EOS 350D with 100mm f2.8 macro lens; 1/50 sec at f16; 200 ISO; tripod.
