2006: 11-14 Years - Specially Commended
Alberto Fantoni (Italy)
Tit acrobatics
Alberto lives near the Alps of Lombardy, northern Italy, and often goes up there to photograph animals with his father and brother. Almost always he sees tits flying among the branches. On his last winter trip, he decided to put a birdfeeder on a fir tree, positioned so there were cones in front, and to wait and see what would come. Coal tits were the first visitors, followed by this crested tit. Alberto gave it star treatment, firing off as many shots as he could as it hovered, positioning itself to land and feed. 'We had just bought a digital camera,' he says, 'so it was great to be able to take as many photos as I wanted without worrying about wasting film'.
Nikon D70s with 300mm f4D lens; 1/640 sec at f5.6.
