2006: 10 Years and Under - Specially Commended
Ilkka Räsänen (Finland)
Pygmy owl stare
'I had just got back from school,' says Ilkka, 'when a friend phoned to say a small owl had landed in his back garden. I grabbed my camera - and my uncle - and we sped off.' The owl was waiting for them, perched on a branch complete with lichen and a blue backdrop - the perfect stage. 'I managed to creep very close,' says Ilkka, 'and was so excited to have eye contact'.
Nikon D70s with Nikkor 300mm f4D lens and 1.4x teleconverter; 1/600 sec at f6.3; 400 ISO; monopod.
