2006: 10 Years and Under - Winner
Nils Grundmann (Germany)
Pelican glare
Nils went specially to the deer park in Berlin to watch the Dalmatian pelicans that live semi-free there. 'I was fascinated by their bathing antics in a fountain,' says Nils, 'and watched them for ages with my father'. After washing, they sat on a fence to preen their feathers, which is where Nils singled out this individual. 'I lay on the ground directly in front of it and focused on its head. The bird stared at me hard, curious about my behaviour,' adds Nils, 'which is when I took the shot'.
Canon EOS 10D with EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS lens; 1/60 sec at f4.5.
