2006: Wildscapes - Specially Commended
Theo Allofs (Germany)
The great delta
Australia is such a huge country that sometimes the only way to convey an impression of its vast landforms is to photograph them from the air. Theo wanted to show the scale of northern Australia's great Kimberleys wilderness. So he chose to shoot a classic floodplain landscape in the rainy season, when the trees lining the river are lush and the land is flooded and almost impenetrable. 'I was also hoping', he says, 'that I wouldn't fall out of the plane when it banked steeply, so I could photograph looking directly down'. To get in the perfect position for the composition he had in mind, the plane had to circle many times. The result was a vista of enormous proportions.
Mamiya 7 II (6x7 format) with 45mm lens; Fujichrome RVP.
