2006: Creative Visions - Highly Commended
Katherine Keates (Canada)
Bark as art
Quiver trees - tough southern African aloes - are a constant source of photographic inspiration, whether as silhouettes or textured close-ups. 'As the trees age, the scales on the trunk become more defined,' says Katherine, who was on a photographic trip to Namibia. 'And in the dawn light, these golden-brown flakes create strong graphic patterns. I find the natural creation of such dramatic colour and design as stimulating and inspirational as any contemporary painting.'
Canon 20D with 28-135mm IS lens; 1/8 sec at f22; 100 ISO; extension tubes.
