2006: Urban Wildlife - Highly Commended
Peter Lilja (Sweden)
Ermine at home
Driving through the countryside in February, when snow was on the ground, Peter passed an old house in a small village where the owner was feeding the birds. He stopped to photograph a woodpecker and was concentrating so hard he 'nearly missed a flicker of movement under the house'. A stoat in full ermine was peeping through a hole. Returning a couple of days later, Peter set up watch. 'What luck', he adds, 'that the stoat should have popped up just in the spot where the granite stone and wall contrast so well. It stared at me for a few seconds before disappearing.'
Nikon D2x with 200-400mm f4 lens; 1/60 sec at f5.6; 280 ISO; beanbag.
