2006: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Highly Commended
Steffen Sailer (Germany)
Quiver tree frame
'When I came across this wonderful old plant,' says Steffen, 'I knew I'd found the image I'd been looking for. The golden-brown gnarled branches make the perfect frame, and your eye is drawn directly to the perfectly shaped quiver tree in the distance.' The location is the Quiver Tree Forest in the semi-desert environment of Namibia. The thick, cracked bark is part of the aloe's adaptation to the extreme conditions, protecting the tissues underneath.
Canon EOS 1D Mark II with 17-40mm lens; 1/60 sec at f22; 400 ISO; tripod.
