2006: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Highly Commended
Johann C Mader (South Africa)
Mopane mosaic
'In autumn, the mopane woodland explodes with colour,' says Johann. 'The angular, lichen-draped branches of this particular tree provided the ideal contrast in a composition of pattern and colour.' The mopane is the most common tree in the northern parts of South Africa's Kruger National Park - easily recognised by its butterfly-shaped leaves. It's also a favourite with elephants, who feast on its high-protein leaves and seeds.
Nikon D70 with VR 70-200mm f2.8 lens; 1/30 sec at f19; 200 ISO; beanbag.
