2006: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Winner
Dirk Heckmann (Germany)
Lily leaf
Fascinated by leaves - the multitude of different shades of green and variety of textures and shapes - Dirk chose to spend a day in Berlin's Botanic Garden. What attracted him to this water-lily leaf was its relationship with the water. He noticed the way it controlled the amount of water on its surface, the way the water changed the colours and, sliding into its centre, magnified the details of the leaf, and the shape the water itself took. 'The difficulty was angling the tripod so I could shoot down on the leaf,' adds Dirk. 'I took many images before I was satisfied.'
Canon EOS 10D with 100mm f2.8 macro lens; 1/40 sec at f7.1; tripod.
