2006: Animal Portraits - Highly Commended
Ingo Arndt (Germany)
Reflection
A beautifully crafted optical illusion captures the essence of a water boatman. Hanging from the water film, its reflection becomes the portrait. 'I made it a home in an aquarium so I could position my camera for the right shot,' says Ingo. 'The dimples - its footprints - are what you will see on a still summer day when the bug waits patiently to grab passing prey on the surface.' Perfect lighting and focus reveal the details of this formidable hunter - its enormous eyes, sucking mouthparts (tucked under its head) and a pair of huge back legs used for sculling at speed.
Canon EOS 1D Mark II with 100mm macro lens; 1/250 sec at f22; 100 ISO; 4 Canon flashes.
