2006: Behaviour: All Other Animals - Highly Commended
Manoj Sindagi (India)
Terrapin hot-spot
This sculptural arrangement caught Manoj's eye. He was running a wildlife photography workshop for school students at the time, in Nagarahole National Park, south India. 'We were on an evening safari,' says Manoj, 'when we came across these sunbathing Indian pond terrapins, necks outstretched, seemingly offering salutations to the sun god'. Manoj stalked them until close enough to photograph their reflections against the golden light. 'Just as I pressed the shutter, the turtle pile broke apart and slipped into the water. It gave me the opportunity to show my students how important it is for a wildlife photographer to be familiar with an animal's behaviour.'
Canon EOS 20D with EF 500mm f4 lens and 1.4x teleconverter; 1/320 sec at f6.3; 400 ISO; Manfrotto monopod.
