2006: Animals in their Environment - Specially Commended
Vincent Munier (France)
Snowy white-out
Vincent waited for hours in freezing conditions for this male snowy owl to appear. When it finally swooped silently across the wind-sculpted snowscape, it was, says Vincent, 'transformed into an angel', wings echoing the gentle curves of the snow. 'It was magical when it turned its head to look at me and our eyes met.' Vincent has taken many photos of animals in their environment, but adds, 'this is one of my favourites. I have rarely managed to capture such poetry in motion.'
Nikon D2x with 70-200mm lens; 1/2000 sec at f6.3; 200 ISO.
