2006: Animals in their Environment - Runner-up
Cheryl Ertelt (United States of America)
Snow hare
When an Arctic hare is resting, all you're likely to see are its eyes and black ear tips. But in 2005, when less snow than usual fell at Cape Mary in Churchill, Canada, hares sheltering against the lichen-coated rocks became white silhouettes. But this hare was so sure it was still camouflaged 'it didn't move a whisker either as I approached or when I retreated', says Cheryl. 'The overcast light worked well for me, with no shadows to distract from the contrasting colours.'
Canon 1D Mark II with 70-200mm f4 lens; 1/400 sec at f5.6; 400 ISO.
