2005: Nature in Black & White - Winner
Martyn Colbeck (United Kingdom)
Elephants below Mount Kilimanjaro
It was Martyn's birthday, and he decided to take a day's break from filming (making the third in a trilogy of films documenting the lives over 15 years of a family of elephants in Amboseli National Park). That morning, the air was tantalisingly clear, and you could see the summit of Kilimanjaro more than 40kilometres (25 miles) away. Martyn couldn't resist going out to take photographs. Several elements came together to make this picture special: the clarity of the view of the mountain, the impressive cloud build-up and a line-up of elephants dusting themselves to keep cool as they travelled towards the swamps. It was the best birthday present he could have hoped for. Moments later, cloud obliterated the mountain, and the line of elephants broke up.
