2005: The World in Our Hands - Runner-up
Erlend Haarberg (Norway)
Mountain shot
Taken in Knutshø, central Norway, in late February, this image is unsettlingly beautiful - the mountain hare's winter coat and the pristine snow, highlighted by the bright winter sun and in contrast with the blood. It was this stark contrast (symbolic as well as actual) that attracted the photographer to the scene. The hunter with his shotgun on the horizon was pleased with his deed - hunting hares above the tree line is not usually this successful.
Nikon F3 with Nikkor 28mm f2.8 lens; 1/250 sec at f11; Fujichrome Velvia 50; polarising filter.
