2005: Wildscapes - Highly Commended Print
Thomas Endlein (Germany)
Rainforest dawn
Thomas Endlein had just one opportunity to climb a 100-metre (328-foot) observation tower at a small research station in Sabah, Borneo. He went up at dawn, before the sun had a chance to burn off the mist. Only the tallest trees, those 30-40 metres (98-131 feet) high, poked through the dense layer. 'The pattern of mist changed so rapidly the view was never the same from one minute to the next,' Thomas says. 'I wanted to create the breathtaking mood of the rainforest. As the sun rose, the air became filled with the songs of birds and gibbons, but the very first noise I heard was a distant chainsaw.'
Canon EOS 1N RS with 100-400mm lens; 1/60 sec (+ one f-stop overexposed); Fujichrome Astia 100; tripod.
