2005: Wildscapes - Winner
Staffan Widstrand (Sweden)
Ice rainbow
Stora Sjofallet National Park in far north Swedish Lapland is famous for its reindeer and spectacular sub-arctic landscape. Staffan spent several weeks there in January on a photo-story about Saami ecotourism. One sunrise, while reindeer-sledding, he witnessed the year's first rays of sun hit this mountain crag and create a rainbow in the icy fog. 'None of us, not even the reindeer herdsmen, had ever seen a rainbow in temperatures as low as -25°C (-13°F),' said Staffan. Within five minutes, it had faded away, as if retreating into the heart of the mountain.
Nikon D70 with 200-400mm f4 lens; 1/125 sec at f11; 200 ISO; tripod.
