2005: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Highly Commended Print
Tom Putt (Australia)
Ancient snow gum
This trunk - photographed in one of the coldest regions of Australia: Charlotte's Pass, in New South Wales - impressed Tom by the intensity of the contrasting colours of its bark and its twisted form and sheer bulk. The size of the snow gum compared to other, thinner trees in the forest suggests it is hundreds of years old. Mist and rain added a mystical feel to the alpine forest - a remnant of a once-vast area of forest badly damaged by a huge bushfire in 2003, which burnt more than a million hectares of state forests and national parks.
Canon EOS 20D with EF 17-35mm f2.8 lens; 1/20 sec at f10; 200 ISO.
