2005: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Runner-up
Adam Gibbs (Canada/UK)
Frosted rose-hips
Taking a pre-dawn stroll through Deer Lake Municipal Park (former prison grounds, now a wildlife oasis) in Burnaby, British Columbia, Adam found this late-autumn display. 'It was such a riotous mix of frosted stalks and grasses,' he says. 'At first I couldn't find a focal point, but I was fascinated by the way the rose hips interweaved through the grass.' As dawn came and sunlight filtered through the leaves, the picture materialised. 'I love looking at the intricate details when the image is enlarged,' he adds. 'It's a common enough scene but one we seldom stop to appreciate.'
