2005: In Praise of Plants and Fungi - Winner
László Novák (Hungary)
Spring snowflakes in the flooded forest
Every spring, László visits an ancient forest in western Hungary with his family to admire the millions of flowers that carpet the forest floor. This March, they were shocked to find that a river had burst its banks and part of the forest was a lake. László never travels anywhere without at least some of his photographic kit, which luckily included a pair of rubber boots. What fascinated him most was the reflected forest of towering, leafless trees. Though the light was dull, it was ideal for bringing out the white of the petals of this drowning snowflake plant - a contrast against the soft brown of the water and dark, interlacing network of reflected branches.
Canon EOS 20D with Canon 17-40mm f4 lens; 1/6 sec at f11; 100 ISO; tripod.
