2005: Animal Portraits - Highly Commended Print
Danny Green (United Kingdom)
Red deer headgear
So pumped up was this stag while defending his small harem from a rival stag that Danny managed to get to within just 6 metres (20 feet) of him. His headgear is bracken, caught up in his antlers during head-to-head combat in Bradgate Park, Leicestershire's medieval deerpark. 'I'd watched these two stags every morning for three weeks during the autumn rut,' says Danny. 'They were extremely evenly matched and had just three or four females each, so the fights became increasingly frenetic. When he finally noticed me, he briefly made eye contact, giving me this mischievous portrait.'
Canon EOS 1V with 500mm IS lens; 1/125 sec at f8; Fujichrome Velvia 50 rated at 80; tripod.
