Eye for a bird

Fergus's favourite place to be is in the Scottish Cairngorms in winter. 'I have such respect for the animals that survive here, especially ptarmigan.' Alert to danger but relying on its camouflage to keep safe, this ptarmigan watched Fergus's every move as, having spotted the bird's head, Fergus crept up a mountain slope, climbed over a ridge, traversed down it and then crawled through a rock field to get to a vantage point where he could start taking pictures. The ptarmigan stayed put for half an hour and then suddenly turned and faced the afternoon sun. 'I love the simplicity,' says Fergus, 'the subtle light caught in his eye and the hint of red wattle above.'
